May Books

Here's what I've been reading in May:

Dead Souls (DI Kim Stone Book #6) by Angela Marsons* - Human bones are unearthed during a routine archaeology dig turning the farmer's field into a crime scene. As it's on the border with another force DI Kim Stone is forced to work with Detective Travis, an old partner with whom Kim fell out with and his team.

As the bones are sorted it becomes apparent that there is more than one victim and that they really suffered before their deaths. Meanwhile DS Bryant and DS Dawson are teamed up which causes niggles. DC Stacey Wood feels she's being ignored by everyone and goes off grid to investigate hate crimes running alongside the main investigation without telling the team what she's up to which has devastating consequences.. A fast paced read with many twists and turns. Would highly recommend.

The Sewing Machine by Natalie Fergie - this is an absolute gem of a read and it's one of my favourites this year so far.

The story is set in the past and the present day and I absolutely loved it. It's 1911 and Jean joins the strike at the Singer Factory in Clydebank which changes her life path forever.

In the present day Fred has just inherited a fully furnished flat from his grandfather. In the process of going through everything he discovers a Singer sewing machine which was his grandmother's. He discovers notebooks which note every piece of work sewn on the machine over the years. It's an amazing tale with the lives of the characters which you grow to love interwoven throughout the years. It really is a special book which I'm planning to read again soon!

A Dangerous Crossing by Rachel Rhys - it's 1939 and Lily and other chaperoned girls are on their way to Australia to work in domestic service. She throws herself into life on board and meets many interesting characters. She's dazzled by Eliza and Max Campbell, the wealthy first class passengers who love to party and heart throb Edward Fletcher who is travelling with his sister Helena.

They all have something to hide and by the end of the journey two people will be dead and WWII will have been declared. An absolutely brilliant read which I couldn't put down.

A Perfect Heritage by Penny Vincenzi - I hadn't read a Penny Vincenzi in years. As ever it's a huge book with nearly 1k pages. The House of Farrell was created in the 1950s by husband and wife team, Cornelius and Athina Farrell. The Cream is their cult iconic product which still flies off the shelf in the present day.

However, sales are down and the company is close to bankruptcy. Bianca Bailey, hard headed business woman supreme is drafted in to turn the company around. Athina is determined to fight her every step of the way.

Florence Hamilton, who is in charge of the bijoux flagship store in the Berkeley Arcade is keen to help Bianca. She's been there since the beginning and knows so much about the company and it's staff. A fabulous read with lots of interesting characters. Highly recommend.

Under the Harrow by Flynn Berry - Nora is due to go and stay with her sister Rachel. She's not at the station to meet her as planned. So Nora takes herself to her house and finds that her sister has been murdered.

Nora can't return to her life until she finds what happened to her sister. She's obsessed that an unsolved assault in Rachel's past is connected and decides to do a bit of detective work herself with devastating consequences. Fast paced and edgy with a twist I didn't see coming.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman* - an absolute gem. Full of laugh out loud moments as well as sad moments. Eleanor Oliphant has worked in a design studio doing the accounts since she left University.

She's used to being on her own since that thing happened which tore her family apart. She still speaks to Mummy once a week on the phone.

She never strays from her routine - same lunch. same dinners each week night and same bottles of Glen's vodka to see her through the weekend. She's socially awkward and keeps herself to herself but such a compelling character. She finds a friend at work, kind hearted Raymond who helps her see the world in a different light. They spend time together after helping Sammy, an older man who fell in the street. It's a cracker of a book.

The Ferryboat by Kate Blackadder - this is an easy reading tale of a family who relocate to a rundown hotel in the Highlands. The story follows renovation, ups and downs and village life. It's a great wee read.

Dancers in the Wind by Anne Coates - Freelance Journalist and single mum Hannah Weybridge is commissioned to write a piece on the red light district of Kings Cross. She meets a young prostitute called Princess. She finds she can't get her out of her mind and when she turns up on her doorstep beated up and bleeding she finds she can't turn her away.

She also interviews Police Inspector Tom Jordan about the deaths of three prostitutes and they seem to be linked. She does a bit of detective work herself and finds out that those in the upper echelons are involved and this puts her life in danger. She also receives a cryptic note from Princess which becomes clearer later on. A fast paced read which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Books I read last month (due to be published shortly):

The Honeymoon by Tina Seskis* - I'm a huge fan of Tina's books having loved One Step too Far and A Serpentine Affair. The Honeymoon is told in the present day, the recent past and some months before.

It's a fast paced and edgy read and I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Jemma and Jamie have just got married and are on a dream honeymoon on a tiny island in the Maldives.

All is not well. Jamie goes missing and the finger points firmly in Jemma's direction.. a rollercoaster of a read with an ending I just didn't see coming. Loved it.

The Lucky Ones by Mark Edwards* - the story starts with a woman's body being found in the grounds of an old priory. Her eyes are open and her face is fixed in a smile. She seems to be in a state of bliss.

Ben Hofland has moved back to the sleepy village he grew up in to be nearer to his mum who is dying of cancer and as a new start for him and his son Ollie after splitting up with his wife.

Ollie is finding it hard to settle in. Ben's looking for work and chances upon some too good to be true freelance work. Things also start getting better for Ollie at school.

Detective Imogen Evans and the team are trying to find a connection and a motive for the killings. The bodies have all been left in the same way and they believe a serial killer is at large. Fast paced and twisty I really enjoyed it.

May: Lately I've Been Loving

Here are my May loves:

We had a night away in North Berwick last week. It's one of my favourite get-away places. It just calms my soul and makes me happy. Being sunny was a lovely added bonus!

These Pip & Nut Squeeze packs are great for some nutty goodness on the go!

I first spotted The Salt Parlour on Instagram and this Energising Lime & Avocado Salt & Sulphur Scrub is gorgeous! It deeply exfoliates the skin and smells delicious. I also love the simple but pretty packaging.

I love Estonian brand, JOIK. See my review of these salts* HERE. They make for a great soak and are great value at £6.00.

Latest Launch at Love Lula is Walden Natural Perfumes. I've been testing out two of them. You can see my thoughts on Two Eternities EdP* HEREA Little Star-Dust EdP* is a heady blend of Ylang Ylang, Iris, Jasmine, Amyris and Tonka Bean. It is a beautiful rich floral which is very long lasting and was a finalist for Best Natural Beauty Product in the Natural & Organic Awards Europe 2017.

This Rose Oud Soy Wax Candle** by [M] Botanicals is simply exquisite. See my review HERE.

Phyto Botanicals have recently re-branded and are now called Vetivert & Co. I've been testing out two of their products which are gorgeous. Lumina Nourishing Facial Oil (£35 - 30ml)** is a beautiful blend of Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Sweet Orange & Ginger with a base of Rosehip, Squalane, Jojoba & Safflower oils. It absorbs easily and quickly and is suitable for dry to combination skins. The deep cleansing beauty balm (£25 - 50g)** can be used as a cleansing balm or moisturiser and contains ingredients which brighten and nourish the skin.

I've been enjoying paperbacks again and here are some in my TBR pile!

Zing Organics

I first tried Zing Organics when I bought an artisan gourmet seasoning from Cranachan & Crowdie, a beautiful store on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh selling unusual foods and crafts from Scotland.

I came across Zing Organics again quite recently and bought a couple of beauty items. Everything is really exquisite and the scents are amazing. Founder Kirsty developed sensitivities during pregnancy and decided to create her own natural perfumes and candles. Visit Kirsty at her studio workshop in Tarbet, Loch Fyne, Argyll. Everything is beautifully packaged, eco-friendly and with recyclable packaging.

The parcel was an absolute joy to open. A nice touch is you can choose a SAMPLE with your order. Onto my purchases:

Yogi's Chakra Balancing Perfumes (£21.50) - I chose the one which appealed to me most - Sacral Chakra with Cardamon, Vanilla and Pink Grapefruit. It's a beautiful spicy scent with a touch of citrus and vanilla.

These are presented in glass bottles with a vivid aqua tone and pipette. Once filled with the perfumed oils the bottles "take on a multi toned greeny/blue feel which conjures the spirit, purity and freedom of yoga practice on a pristine beach".

"Each aroma has been devised to provide Chakra by Chakra balancing properties. Apply to the temples or pulse points during practice or meditations to embrace and enhance the yoga experience".

You can also apply a drop between your palm and inhale for the perfect start to your day.

My second buy was Aromasoar Solid Perfume Mini Size - in French Bourbon, Geranium & May Chang (2ml - £17.50) which is a gorgeous perfume (it's ideal for travelling or to pop in a pocket or handbag). It was also a Bronze winner in the Natural Beauty Bible by Green Parent Magazine 2016.

There are four blends to choose from and again I went for the one which most appealed (I now want the rest!). The solid perfume balm is presented in a little sliding lid tin.  Apply to pulse points to lift your mood. 100% Certified Organic ingredients.

I've not tried these Gourmet Infused Basil Sea Salts yet. They are perfect to take pasta dishes to another level!

Live in the Light: Pure Anada Body Care

I've been testing out some body care products* by Canadian brand, Pure Anada which are available to buy at Live in the Light. I've previously tried some of their skincare (review) which was effective and nice to use.

Tahitian Garden Shower Gel (300ml - £14.50)* is presented in a pump action bottle. The wash is creamy, luxurious and richly scented. It deeply nourishes while cleaning the skin. The coconut oil base gives the wash a gentle lather. The scent is exotic and floral.

I chose to try a non-matching Hand & Body Lotion in Wild Cherry (300ml - £18.50)* which has a rich fruity scent. The lotion is more cream like in texture (and may have been best suited to a pot rather than a pump action bottle). Again, the product is nice to use and the lotion deeply nourishes the skin leaving it delicately scented.

The star product of the trio for me is Lemongrass Sugar Scrub (340ml - £21.50)* which is in a giant tub! The zesty and uplifting scent lifts the spirits while the scrub deeply exfoliates and moisturises the skin. I've found it has the perfect amount of scrubbiness to exfoliate and smooth the skin. Love!

Have you used any Pure Anada products? See the range available at Live in the Light HERE.

With any order over the Bank Holiday Weekend you'll receive a FREE (while stocks last) Orgaid Sheet Mask!

"These masks are amazing to revitalise, nourish and brighten your beautiful faces, are perfect to take with you if you are going on holiday, relaxing at home or are just a little wrinkly!!

If you have spent the day in the sun, the Greek Yoghurt Mask is ideal to nourish, soothe, tighten and condition. If your skin is feeling a little dull - the Vitamin C Mask will revitalise, firm and boost collagen. And if you are worried about those wrinkles, the anti-ageing Mask will hydrate, calm and reduce those fine lines.

Pop one on in the bath, on the plane or after a day on the sun lounger..

They can be reused so once you have finished fold the mask back up, put back in the wrapper and seal with a clip ready for next time".

Once you have placed your order, add your choice of Orgaid Mask to your cart and this will be added free of charge.

Offer ends Monday 29 May 2017 at midnight.

May Empties

I'm not going to use anything else up so here's what I've been using up in May:

Omorovicza Rejuvenating Night Cream 5ml which was beautiful. This is a pricey cream so I'll probably not buy it. I'll definitely try and pick it up in one of the mini pots again.

Ermana Cleanse Balm 15ml* a lovely balm cleanser. See my review HERE. I'll definitely buy when my stash reduces a bit.

Botanicals Nourish Moisturiser 5ml* I adore any form of travel/try me size so I loved using this gorgeous moisturiser. See my mini review HERE. Would buy this moisturiser full size.

Madara Micellar Water 100ml which is a staple product for me. I've just cracked open a new bottle. See my review HERE.

Gallinee La Culture Foaming Facial Cleanser 120ml* which I simply adored. See my review HERE. It's one I'd buy when my stash of cleansers reduces a bit.

Aster & Bay Rosewater Mist 100ml I simply loved this beautiful mist which also contains Himalayan Pink Salt and Honeysuckle as well as Bulgarian Rose. See my review HERE. I'll definitely buy this again as I loved it.

Guerlain Midnight Secret Late Night Recovery Cream 15ml I used to use this years ago. Was nice to revisit and I'm sure to pick this up again. Great to use if you have a late night as it helps to revive the skin overnight.

Omorovicza Refining Facial Polish 30ml which is one of my favourite facial exfoliators. I've just opened another tube.

Molton Brown Frankincense & Allspice Hand Wash 100ml I adore this Christmassy hand wash and buy it up in the sales (it's only available at Christmastime). See my review HERE. I've got plenty remaining in my stash currently but I'll be stocking up again in December.

Philip B Oud Royal Forever Shine Shampoo 15ml which is a good size sample. This was nice to use and made my hair look and feel good. Might buy full size at some point.

TOSe Apothecary French Clay & Lemongrass Detoxifying Body Scrub 200ml* which was beautiful. It had a really uplifting scent and make exfoliating into a luxurious ritual. See my review HERE.

Humble Sweet Pea & Verbena Hand Cream 75ml* a beautiful hand cream from a gorgeous range. See my review HERE. Sure to buy when my stash reduces a bit as this was very effective and had a beautiful scent.

JOIK Rejuvenating Beauty Elixir sachet this seems like a lovely product but it is a small sample. I also loved JOIK's Silky Facial Serum with Cranberry & Wheatgerm oils.

bliss fatgirl slim arm perfecting cream 7ml this gel-cream absorbed quickly and seemed like it would be a nice product to use. Not sure if I'd buy full size or not.

Jo Loves Smoked Plum & Leather sample vial which I simply adored! Full size is on my to buy list.

Esse Gel Cleanser 5ml sachet I wasn't expecting this gel cleanser to be minty scented. I got four uses from this sachet (making it a great try me) and yes, I want the cleanser full size!

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue 1ml huge fan of this eye cream. My pal Julie got me a full size pot at my birthday so expect a review soon!

Starling Aromatics Jasmine & Ylang Ylang goddess essence* this little gem of a product was a beautiful luxe treat. It smells simply heavenly and is studded with Himalayan salt crystals. It can be used for moisturising the skin, for massage or just pop it in your bath for a relaxing soak. They are £6 each so it really is an indulgent treat (it would be perfect for that romantic weekend away) I got two uses from it. I'd prefer less packaging (although it is sweet) and more product for the money.  I was give this one complimentary from the owner at Pretty Pink.

FOM London: Antioxidant Repair Oil Complex & Hydra Pump Serum

I'm a huge fan of FOM London having tried several of their products in the past. A while back they relaunched their skincare range which is luxurious, innovative and scientifically evidenced (and gorgeous!)

I've been testing two generous trial sizes (10ml) which came to me via the Love Lula's Accredited Blogger Program.

Love Lula Beauty Box: May 2017

My May Love Lula Beauty Box* arrived the other day and as ever it's fantastic value for money (from June it's going up to £13.95 recurring a month for UK subscribers which includes P&P) but even with the tiny rise it's one of the best value monthly beauty boxes out there. This month the contents are worth £45 and there are 3 full sizes inside as well as 2 travel sizes.

So what's inside:

From Laidbare there is DIY! Two in One Cleanser & Toner 125ml (£6.99)* which cleanses and tones the skin and is suitable for all skin types. I'm looking forward to trying this one!

I'm a huge fan of John Masters Organics haircare and inside there are two 30ml travel sizes - Lavender & Rosemary Shampoo (£2.25)* and Citrus & Neroli Detangler (£2.25)*. These are both being popped in my travel bag.

From PHB Ethical Beauty we have Gentle Moisturiser with Shea Butter & Apricot 50ml (£16.95)* which soothes, calms and nourishes sensitive skins. My skin isn't really sensitive but this seems lovely so I'll definitely be trying it out.

I've recently been testing out Apple & Bears travel sizes. The company is family owned and British. Finest organic ingredients are used and the formulations are created by a team of specialists. Husband and Wife founders, Dean and Kay wanted to make a difference to people's lives (they donate a portion of their profits to worthy causes close to their hearts like Breast Cancer Care).

Apple was chosen for it's healthy skin and organic goodness and Bears for their ability to live in a natural rhythm. The packaging is plain white recyclable plastic and it's the story behind the logo which makes it shine which is a tribute to the many men and women diagnosed with breast cancer. 100 Acres Apothecary Rose & Lavender Bubble Bath

I received this gorgeous bottle of 100 Acres Apothecary's in my The Spring Edit box which is currently available to buy at Latest in Beauty. I was aware of the brand but hadn't had the pleasure of trying any products before.
