January Books Roundup

Here's what I've been reading in January (I'm also trying to do Penguin's Your Classic Books Reading Challenge 2018 but alas I've not finished January's read yet - The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde) so I'll let you know my thoughts in my February roundup.

Follow the Dead - Rhona MacLeod #12 by Lin Anderson - I'm a huge fan of the series and raced through this fast paced read.  When on a weekend away with Sean, Rhona joins the local mountain rescue team on the Cairngorm summit.

A plane has crashed and the whereabouts of its occupant or occupants are unclear, three young people have mysteriously died and the fourth is missing. DS McNab is involved in a raid in the city centre club and there are more questions than answers. It seems like the cases could be connected and in turn connected with Norway... as always a great read and brilliant to catch up with the familiar faces we love so well - Rhona, Sean, McNab and Chrissy. Roll on book #13.

Shadow Man by Margaret Kirk - I really enjoyed this debut crime novel. The setting is Inverness and Detective Inspector Lukas Mahler is thrown in at the deep end on his return to town. His boss tells him he is in charge of two murder investigations which will take up a lot of his time (he also wants to keep an eye on his frail and mentally ill mother, the main reason he returned north).

Police informant Kevin Ramsay and popular TV Presenter, Morven Murray are both found dead. Morven is found by her estranged sister Anna on her wedding morning. Both Anna and Morven's fiance Ross have argued with her and DI Mahler believes they aren't telling the truth.. there are connections and truths interwoven in the story from the past and present and some will take your breath away. Can't wait for book #2.

Dark Game - DI Kelly Porter #1 by Rachel Lynch* - I'm taking part in the blog tour for this exciting debut novel in February. So I'll include the link to my review in my February roundup.

Still Me by Jojo Moyes* - oh how I loved meeting up with Lou again! This is a fantastic read which I highly recommend (it's the third instalment in the me before you trilogy).

Lou Clarke is having her big adventure and going to work in New York for a year. She's working for the filthy rich Gopniks who live in a huge apartment near Central Park. She's looking after Mr Gopik's younger second wife, Agnes who seems nice but Lou needs to remember she's just paid help.

The other characters in the story who I loved reading about were Ashok, the porter of the apartment block and his ballsy wife, Ilaria the grumpy housekeeper and Mrs de Witt and her snappy little dog who bring the story to life. They are real people with real lives.

Lou's missing her Paramedic boyfriend Sam (but he's coming to visit soon!) She's worried about his new female partner at work who seems too friendly and familiar with him. She meets Josh, who looks very like Will and that in turn brings it's own problems.  Things change for Lou and she takes a new direction which brings new friendships, a new job and a very different way of life. I absolutely loved it! (and might very well read it again!)

The Outrun by Amy Liptrot - I loved the descriptions of Orkney, the scenery, wildlife, landscapes, weather and way of life of its people. Amy returns home after more than a decade in London to the Outrun and the farm she grew up on.  She's come home to heal, recover from her addiction and rediscover herself. The story contains flashbacks to her life before. I found it an interesting read.

The Encyclopedia of Essential Oils by Julia Lawless - I found this book very interesting and enjoyed reading about the different essential oils. But having picked a kindle edition I couldn't flip back or forward easily.

What have you been reading this month?

Willow & White Candle Co: Sea Salt & Wood Sage Candle Melts

Scottish based, Willow & White Candle Co have a great range of candles (from travel votives to three wick candles), diffusers (at a very affordable £19.50) and soy wax melts. Founders and creators, sisters Susie and Linda wanted to create luxurious handcrafted candles at affordable prices with pretty but minimal packaging. There are twelve scents in the range - Pomegranate, Eucalyptus, Lemon & Mint, Blackberry & Bay, Winter, Lemongrass & Ginger, Lime, Basil & Mandarin, Nutmeg & Ginger, Sea Salt & Wood Sage, Pear & Freesia, Amber & Lavender, Pomelo and Basil & Neroli Blossom.

A while back I bought a pack of their Sea Salt & Wood Sage Candle Melts - £4.75 for 6 (which I think is very good value). I've found them to melt evenly and the scent is beautiful (and similar to the Jo Malone perfume of the same name). It has notes of grapefruit, bergamot, tangerine, sea breeze, seaweed and minerals with base notes of musk, amber and cedarwood. I've been burning them in my dining kitchen and the sea inspired aroma beautifully scents the room - highly recommend!

Review: nknaturals London

I discovered nknaturals via Wonderlusting Lynda - her instagram FEED is always full of such wonderful things (so I blame her for enabling me - ha!).

Founder and formulator, Nicola has been making her own skincare since she was a model some 30 years ago. While living in Lanzarote in 2011 she created her skincare line and started selling at local markets.  She moved back to London after 6 years to enable a wider range of people to be able to try and use the brand. You can buy online HERE.

The range is handcrafted with love using natural ingredients and I love that if you send back your packaging for reuse you'll get 20% off your next order - such a smart and eco friendly idea!

I bought 2 items - beautiful healing cleansing balm and raspberry lip balm and Nicola very kindly popped in two for me to try - life restoration mistand a sample pot of delicate healing cleansing balm*.

Each product comes with informative notes about the product - which I think is a nice touch.

beautiful healing cleansing balm is gorgeous! It nurtures, soothes and regenerates the skin, cleansing and healing (it was great when I fainted over Christmas time, bashing my nose - it soothed my grazes!) It's also good at helping to fade scars, balance the skin, use as a luxe face mask overnight, use on eyebrows and lashes to help growth and condition, use on nails, cuticles, elbows and feet and to tame flyaways - you know I adore a multi-use product!

To use as a cleansing balm: apply a small amount to the skin, massaging in to remove make up and daily grime. Remove with warm damp muslin cloth and follow with a spritz of life restoration mist.

As it's preservative free it should be stored in a cool dry place. The balm is made with skin loving ingredients including Jojoba and Cacay oils, raw organic beeswax from local bee farmer, Sea Buckthorn, Sunflower Oil, Rosemary, Fragonia and Amber resin. Made in a batch of approximately 10 pots.

life restoration mist* can be used on the face and body providing instant relief from dry, taught sensitive skin. It calms, refreshes, soothes and hydrates.

To use: spritz directly onto the skin, apply to cotton pads before swiping over the skin after cleansing or spray onto cotton pads and apply to the eyes for a soothing treat.

Inside you'll find Frankincense hydrosol, Chamomile hydrosol, lupine peptides, Frangipani, Petitgrain, Benzoin and Witch Hazel Glycerol. It's a lovely product and would be great to pack for your summer holidays. I've currently been enjoying using it spritzed on my skin after cleansing.

Raspberry Lip Balm deeply nourishes the lips. It contains a high level of mineral sun protection. Use on it's own or with lipstick and before bed for an intensive treat. It contains Fair Trade Raw Organic Shea Butter, Vanilla, Titanium dioxide, freeze dried raspberry powder and Oat Kernel flour.

The balm is lovely to use but it only has a whisper of raspberry. I'd personally prefer a stronger scent.

delicate healing cleansing balm (sample pot)* - gently healing and cleansing the balm is good for calming sensitive skins. It's perfect for those prone to eczema, psoriasis and rosacea when the balm is massaged onto the affected area.

To use: cleansing - apply a small amount onto the skin, massaging in before removing with a warm damp muslin cloth, massage onto nails and cuticles and use on the ends of the hair to condition and calm frizz.

The balm is formulated with Coconut oil, raw organic beeswax, Oat Kernel oil, blue Chamomile, Alpine Lavender and Palmarosa.

I've really enjoyed the using the whole range but I'd say my favourite is beautiful healing cleansing balm. Have you tried nknaturals?

January Empties

I'm not going to use anything else up this month so here are my January empties:

Faith in Nature Grapefruit & Orange Shower Gel & Foam Bath 100ml - this came in the Holland & Barrett Advent Calendar and I really liked it's zesty freshness. It was great for a wake up call in my morning shower. Would buy full size.

Buff Natural Body Care NAKED Sea Salt Body Scrub Lovers' Blend 60ml - I absolutely loved this beautiful scented scrub which had the perfect amount of scrubbiness. See my review HERE. Sure to pick this up again.

MOA Fortifying Green Bath Potion 100ml - is one of my favourite bath time products. Luckily, just received another in January's Love Lula Beauty Box. See my review HERE.

Ishga Invigorating Body Oil 100ml* - I absolutely loved this! See my review HERE. I'll definitely buy at some point when my body oil stash reduces a bit.

AA Skincare Green Tea & Aloe Vera Soothing Cleansing Wipes - I don't use wipes very often but find them great to use after a night out or on holiday. I found these ones very gentle and I'll pick them up again.

Organic Trevarno Camomile & Lavender Bath & Body Oil 30ml which came in November's Skin Organics Clean Beauty Box. I loved it so much I rushed out and bought full size. See my thoughts HERE. I'll pick it up again as I love it!

And...I finished two perfumes this month:

Miller Harris Vetiver Insolent EdP 50ml - which I simply love. I picked up a mini in their sale but I'll definitely buy full size soon (it's up there in my top 5).

And another favourite Shay & Blue's Dandelion Fig 30ml (both hubby and friend Julie picked me up bottles for Christmas so I'm well stocked up - thanks both!) See my mini review HERE.

What have you been using up this month?

January: Lately I've Been Loving

I ran out of time in December to do a "Lately I've been Loving" post. But I did share my month-by-month Highlights for 2017. So, my January loves are a little early..

I picked up this sweet little shell heart in COVE which is made by a local artist. It really is the sweetest thing and brings me so much joy.

Just before Christmas this beautiful Millennial palette* by MEMI arrived which contains really wearable shades, both matte and shimmery (£22). I'll be reviewing it soon but just wanted to give it a mention. Pick yours up HERE.

Fortnum & Mason chocolates at Christmas (from my boss). I love the exquisite packaging & what's inside was delicious. A real treat.

Discovering Henné Organics at Naturisimo made my month (if not year) as their Rose Diamonds Lip Exfoliator had been on my wishlist for ages. See my review HERE.

Sara Sheridan who writes the brilliant Mirabelle Bevan series (set in 1950s Brighton) sent me (and others) a short story. I was absolutely delighted. You can pick the first in the series up HERE.

I was thrilled to win a competition on netgalley (courtesy of the publishers) to win a proof copy of the fabulous Still Me by Jojo Moyes*. It's such a brilliant read - so, so lovely to catch up with wonderful Lou again. My review will be up nearer the end of the month in my monthly round up but it's publication day today so go BUY.

It's also publication day for the fabulous M P Wright and J T Ellington in Restless Coffins*. Pick yours up HERE. I was chuffed to bits and then some to get a mention in the acknowledgements again. It's a great series which I highly recommend.

I've totally fallen for beautiful brand Ezàpè Naturals and their glorious body butter which came in this month's fab Skin Organics Clean Beauty Box - see my initial thoughts HERE. The Rosemary Body Butter is so good I had to buy a full size pot! A review will follow.

What have you been loving so far this month?

Shopping My Stash #97

Here's what I've been reaching for this week:

From Walden Natural Perfumes I've been enjoying The Solid Earth EdP* which opens with Petitgrain, has heart notes of Patchouli, Rosewood & Black Pepper and a base of Vetiver and Amyris. It's woody, spicy and creamy and perfect for winter. The other one I've been reaching for from the range is A Different Drummer EdP* which has top notes of fruity Bergamot and Tobacco with a heart of Cedarwood, Black Pepper and Patchouli. Base notes are Amyris, Tonka Bean and Vanilla. It's spicy, woody and has a touch of sweetness.

I love picking up samples with my order (you can pick up to 5 with a £10 order for a small nominal charge - see the selection currently available HERE). This month as part of my Love Lula Accredited Blogger picks I chose REN's Satin Perfection BB Cream 3ml* (£1) which we've received before in a beauty box. This is the perfect try-me size as you get several uses from the tube. The silicone free BB cream has colour adaptive technology meaning it will adjust to your skin tone giving flawless and sheer cover (yup, full size is on the wishlist!)

From last March's Beauty Box* I've been enjoying Laidbare's For Richer for Porer Pore Minimiser Facial Masque* (50ml - £7.99) which I find perfect to use on my oily t-zone. It's formulated with Kaolin Clay which draws out impurities and toxins, Japanese Seaweed extract detoxifies and smoothes, Shea Butter hydrates, Liquorice reduces inflammation and Rose Water soothes. The masque also contains natural micro-exfoliation particles which help to stimulate cell renewal and exfoliate. It really makes my skin look bright, healthy and clear.

My final duo are from the JOIK Advent Calendar** first up their gorgeous Silky Lipbalm - Velvety Red (which is worth £6) and gives the lips a moisturising pop of colour. The second item is their Sweet Orange & Mint Body Oil 50ml which deeply nourishes the skin leaving it smelling delicious. You can see my thoughts on the Advent Calendar contents HERE.

*All items featured I received as part of the Love Lula Accredited Blogger Program.
**I put £57 towards the JOIK Advent Calendar.

Botany Blend: MERU, VEGA & ACESO Luxe Face Oil

I've had the real pleasure of trying Botany Blend "green beauty with a dash of luxury". The range is hand crafted in small batches by Founder and Aromatherapist, Katie Paige.  I can honestly say her MERU Omega Rich Luxe Face Oil* (£49 - 30ml) is one of the best I've ever used (and yes, it will be featuring in my best products of 2018).

I've also been lucky enough to try samples (which you can pick up for £2.50 and are a great try me size) of VEGA Illuminating Luxe Face Oil* and ACESO Antioxidant Luxe Face Oil*. The oils are suitable for all skin types.

I just love the branding and square bottle (it's just perfection in my eyes). Each oil is carefully blended with high potency ingredients and where possible Soil Association certified organic. The ingredients are chosen for their powerful synergies they create and the active nutrients they provide. The company also give to charity - planting trees in The Atlantic Forest in Brazil among other things for each purchase which I think is a nice touch.

MERU Omega Rich Luxe Face Oil* the golden drops restore harmony and vitality, purify, strengthen and balance. Organic Essential oils of Neroli and Lotus revitalise, uplift and tone (the scent is incredible - totally nurturing and makes me smile every time I use it). Peruvian Jojoba, Sacha Inchi Safflower and Cactus are high in linoleic acid which helps to mimimise oil production and prevent breakouts. The face oil absorbs instantly smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, adding radiance and vitality.

To use: apply AM and PM to cleansed toned skin. Apply a few drops to the palm and massage onto the face and neck.

I was also pleased to try the other two oils in the range (the sample size is perfect for try me/weekends away). VEGA Illuminating Luxe Face Oil* is best used at night and is scented with Jasmine, Frankincense & Neroli which tones, hydrates and regenerates your skin while you sleep. The scent is heady and luxurious. Japanese Camellia, Evening Primrose, Cactus, Argan and Apricot oils deeply nourish, firm and plump your skin.

To use: PM on cleansed skin. Massage a few drops onto you face and neck.

The third oil in the range is unfragranced ACESCO Antioxidant Luxe Oil* which is suited to those who want their oil "naked". When I had the flu recently I was desperate for something nurturing, calming and unfragranced - which was hard to find in my collection - this would have been perfect! The blend is Organic Sea Buckthorn extract, Rosehip, Safflower and Japanese Camellia oils which are rich in powerful Vitamins, Minerals and Antioxidants.

To use: AM and PM on cleansed and toned skin. Massage a few drops onto your face and neck.

Have you used Botany Blend? If you have, which is your favourite?

Oh WOW this beauty box makes my heart sing! I love how everything is carefully selected and packaged. So what's inside:

I've now tried a couple of products from Siskyn (their Camellia & Safflower Hot Cloth Cleansing Oil and Elixir - Grapefruit & Sweet Fennel Toning Body Oil - reviews to come) which I loved so I've very high hopes for the gorgeous award winning Organic Frankincense & Jasmine Night Facial Oil 30ml which is worth £46! Again, a review will be forthcoming.

From (excited face) new to me brand Nadarra there is an Organic Lavender, Chamomile & Oat Bath Bag (£3.50) which contains a blend of organic lavender, chamomile and oats inside a organic cotton tea bag. This can be used as a foot soak or in the bath (and it can be used twice!). Looking forward to a relaxing soak.

And...another new to me brand is Ginger Stone. Founder Elly, is a Formula Botanica graduate which makes her range all that bit more exciting for me (as I've just started studying with them). Her Soothing Face Mask Shot (£5) is included this month and sounds fabulous. We also get the added bonus of a money off code. Again, a review will follow.

From beautiful Pink's Boutique there is a cute little petit Cuticle Oil (£6). I've used this before and it's lovely. It's stuffed full of nourishing ingredients which repair and care for damaged cuticles.

The day before my box arrived I very nearly bought this Rosemary Body Butter 25g (£6.50) from Ezape Naturals! The whipped butter melts on contact with warm skin and smells heavenly. I'm really looking forward to try it and a review will follow.

The final item (look how beautifully wrapped it is!) is from a brand I've heard of before but not tried any of their products.

From Pink & Green Skincare we have their Relax & Restore Bath Oil 50ml (£7.50) which helps you unwind and relax. The oil contains an uplifting blend of Bergamot, Lavender and Benzoin. Again, a review will follow.

An absolutely amazing January box! Thanks so much Paula!

Blog Tour: The Confession by Jo Spain

Today I'm on the blog tour for fantastic read The Confession by Jo Spain* which is an incredible read and one I couldn't put down!

"Late one night a man walks into the luxurious home of disgraced banker Harry McNamara and his wife Julie. The man launches an unspeakably brutal attack on Harry as a horror-struck Julie watches, frozen by fear. It looks like Harry's many sins - corruption, greed, betrayal - have finally caught up with him.
An hour later the intruder, JP Carney, hands himself in, confessing to the assault. The police have a victim, a suspect in custody and an eye-witness account, but Julie remains troubled.
Has Carney's surrender really been driven by a guilty conscience or is this confession the first calculated move in a deadly game?"
My thoughts?
Once you start reading you just won't want to put this book down! It's fast paced and twisty and the story is told from the viewpoints of Harry, Julie and JP Carney.
A man unknown to either Harry or Julie enters their house and brutally attacks Harry. There seems to be no motive, no reason. Julie finds herself frozen in shock and is unable to comprehend what's happening.
What's really strange is that the attacker hands himself in to the police claiming he doesn't know the McNamaras or understand why he'd do something like this. The psychiatrists believe he wasn't responsible and he's placed in a mental institution rather than prison.
We learn how Harry and Julie met, about their fairytale wedding and the darker and more heartbreaking sides to their married life and his ruthless working life, he'd recently been cleared of financial misconduct during the Celtic Tiger years in a high profile case.
Alice Moody the policewoman in charge of the investigation doesn't believe things can be as clear cut as they seem and vows to get the truth. She believes both Julie and JP Carney are hiding the truth from her.
It's a story of secrets, lies and heartbreak with plenty of twists, turns and connections which had me guessing until the very last page. I absolutely loved it.

Organic Trevarno Skincare: Camomile & Lavender Bath & Body Oil + Try Me Sample Pack

I first tried this beautiful bath & body oil by Organic Trevarno in Skin Organic's Clean Beauty Box - Beauty Sleep in November. I found I loved the calming and soothing scent, so much so that when the sale was on after Christmas at Organic Trevarno I bought full size!

The full size (100ml - £14.50) comes boxed and inside is a pump which can be screwed onto the bottle (which makes for more economical use).

The bath & body oil is a nourishing and gentle mix of soothing and calming camomile and lavender along with olive and almond oils. Use in the bath, in massage or as a body oil.

To use: as a bath oil add 1-2 pumps to to a running bathtub. As a body oil apply a small amount to the palms and massage onto the skin concentrating on dry patches.

I absolutely love it's soothing scent (it's perfect to use before bed for restful slumber).

I also picked up a Try-me Sample Pack which at £3 is incredible value! You pick 3 samples from a selection.  I chose Rose & Jojoba Moisturiser 10ml, Lavender & Geranium Cleansing Oil 5ml and Overnight Replenishing Cream 10ml which are great try me sizes and would be perfect for holidays - I'm really enjoying all three! (with this trio you get a voucher for £5 off a £20 spend for use within 30 days).

What are your favourites from Organic Trevarno?

Love Lula: FIRM BELIEVER Definitive Body Serum

As you'll know I'm a huge fan of Jane Scrivner having recently tried her amazing SKIN DRINK Frankincense Hydrating Mist* and ROSE GOLD Ultimate Facial Serum*. See my review HERE. I'm currently testing out the luxurious NOURISHING CLEANSER Luxury Cleansing Balm**.

I've been trying the award winning FIRM BELIEVER Definitive Body Serum* (100ml - £49) which is fantastic!

The body serum is a luxurious and rich blend of Organic Apricot, Avocado and Jojoba which conditions, softens and deeply nourishes the skin. Red Mandarin, Bergamot and Neroli give the serum an almost "perfume" like scent.

To use: give your body a deep exfoliation before using the product for the first time. This helps to ensure that the oils absorb and don't just sit on dry dead skin. Apply the serum liberally both AM and PM - it's likely that you'll use half the bottle in the first week!

You are now at the "turning point" your skin is loving the ritual and "skin transformation". My skin feels super smooth, nourished, toned and firmer. The remaining serum should last a few weeks (as you won't need to use quite so much and likewise with subsequent bottles).

It's been a beautiful product to use. I've enjoyed the ritual of spending time looking after my body and the scent is stunning - citrussy and floral.  I've used it all over my body including neck, arms, stomach and legs and I've noticed a difference in the way my skin looks and feels - more nourished and firmed (and I will be sad when I've finished it up!)

Pick yours up HERE.
